Victorian scottish montrose agate, silver heart pendant
A beautiful Victorian Silver Scottish Montrose Agate, hand engraved Silver Heart pendant c1860 - 1880s
Such a lovely wearable piece, The hand crafted heart, of hollow form in Sterling Silver is hand engraved with foliate motifs, typical of antique scottish pieces. Set with 4 sections of Montrose Agate, beautiful banded polished grey stones with a slight blue hue, the top smaller piece with a touch of red colour within it The heart is suspended from a hand engraved matching bail ready to hang from your favourite silver chain or ribbon! The heart is plain polished silver to the rear with a slight convex profile, there is a punch mark to the bottom at the rear that looks like it has been there since the piece was made as it is very central and looks deliberately struck, perhaps the provincial makers mark Scottish agate / pebble jewellery became very popular in the mid to late 1800s. Prince Albert and Queen Victoria purchased Balmoral Castle in Scotland in 1852, Queen Victoria brought back souvenirs from her stay and of course what Queen Victoria did many others would follow and agate brooches and other Scottish agate jewellery became all the rage! Unmarked but fully tested as sterling silver Weight: 5.2 grams Dimensions: 40mm high (including bail) x 27mm wide x 5.8mm depth The chain in the image is not included Condition: Very good antique condition - some tiny nibbles to the edges of some agates - only visible under magnification - no cracks to the agate- they are lovely and shiny, a lovely old patina to the silver.
